The position they show (walking with bent knees) is the reflection of their obedience and respect. In the past, it was common that lower-class javanese people walk into the room by taking a step with their knees bent. It was a legacy of hundreds years of colonialism, and this is how local people had to show their respect and obedience, which is they put temselves not on the same level as people from higher-class or people from the occupying government (western people). It was considered as impoliteness when high-ranked people had to look straight or even higher at the eyes of low-ranked or local people.
